Horwich Farrelly at 50: Charlotte Stainton shares her #HFhighlight

This week, in the latest of our series celebrating the achievements of our people in our golden jubilee year, Learning & Development Co-ordinator, Charlotte Stainton, shares her #HFhighlight.

When did you start working at Horwich Farrelly?
I joined the firm in August 2013.

Before joining the firm what was your most unusual job?
Whilst studying I worked for Betfred which involved taking bets and managing customer accounts. I dealt with a lot of interesting characters (including one customer with the surname “Bond” who would only ever respond if you called them “007”) and, as you can imagine, some very disruptive characters –  most often people unhappy that their bets didn’t come in. The experience definitely helped my confidence in dealing with difficult people.

What does a typical day look like for you at Horwich Farrelly?
I’m not sure I have a typical day – I’m involved with a lot of different aspects within Learning & Development (L&D) so each day can be different. This could include arranging internal/external training across the firm, dealing with employees’ CPD (Continuing Professional Development), apprentices, trainee solicitors, education loans and bursaries, legal research, running our online Learning Management System system and working on projects – to name a few! My overall goal each day is to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible.

How has your career progressed since joining the firm?
I started out as a Legal “Float” Secretary working across all the departments in our Manchester headquarters. This was a great opportunity to get to know how each department works and to build working relationships across the firm. In Manchester we have teams working across ten floors in total – I think I’ve worked in every department and on every floor of Alexander House at some point!

After a few years as a Secretary I moved into the supervisor role for the Secretarial Team in July 2017. Then in 2018 an opportunity came up to join the Learning & Development Team. I learned a lot in a short space of time and after four months I was promoted to my current role of Learning & Development Co-Ordinator.

What has been the biggest highlight of your time at Horwich Farrelly?
Working with Pure Innovations and being involved in the first Supported Internship scheme is something I’m really proud of.

Pure Innovations is a Manchester based charity that helps people with disabilities or health related issues find work and live independent lives. I had the opportunity to supervise one of the young men, Kyle, on the scheme and seeing him develop and progress not only within his job role but also as an individual was definitely one of my biggest highlights.

I really enjoyed working with Kyle and was impressed with his dedication and attitude towards any task. We attended the graduation where they received Certificates of Employability from Pure Innovations – this was a very proud moment! It was great news to hear that permanent positions were offered to the interns and that the partnership between Horwich Farrelly and Pure Innovations has continued this year.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and outside interests?
My friends and family are a big part of my life – I’m about to become an aunty for the first time which is very exciting!

I’ve started to travel more and enjoy seeing new places. I recently travelled around Thailand and the USA – Yosemite National Park in California was on my bucket list so was very happy to tick that off.

I enjoy being outdoors and going on hikes, although I am also just as happy with a glass of wine and pizza watching any sort of true crime documentary.

What makes working at Horwich Farrelly different from other firms?
For me it would be the people and the culture – everyone works extremely hard but there is still a relaxed and flexible atmosphere which you don’t always find at other firms. It’s important to enjoy your job and the people you work with play a big part in that – so it definitely helps that there’s a great bunch of people within Horwich Farrelly.

What advice would you give to others starting out in their career with the firm?
Work hard, get involved, build good relationships with your colleagues and don’t be afraid to ask questions to gain more knowledge.
