Horwich Farrelly at 50: Kristian Hunter shares his #HFhighlight

April, 4, 2019

This week, in the latest of our series celebrating the achievements of our people in our golden jubilee year, Legal Secretary, Kristian Hunter, shares his #HFhighlight.

Kristian Hunter

Legal Secretary, Kristian Hunter

When did you start working at Horwich Farrelly?
I started working for Horwich Farrelly in May 2013.

Before joining the firm what was your most unusual job?
I wouldn’t say it was unusual but I once had a pretty hectic work schedule. Before Horwich Farrelly I worked in a law firm that specialised in everything from personal injury, to wills and probate to criminal law. Luckily for me I managed to work in every department they had.

At the time I really wanted experience of working in a law firm, so I approached the firm and offered to work for them for free. I ended up working for them for nine months without pay, and at the same time was doing evening and night shifts at McDonalds running the kitchens.

I would go in to the solicitors at 8am, work until 5.30pm, then get a bus to McDonalds and work from 6pm until 1.30am. Once I’d finished my shift I’d get the bus back home. I’d do this every day during the week and then would work double shifts on Saturday and Sunday in the fast food chain.

I don’t regret working for free as it gave me valuable experience, however, appreciate that views on unpaid work and internships have changed a lot since then, and it’s not something that organisations should be encouraging.

What has been the biggest highlight of your time at Horwich Farrelly?
The great thing about my job is that every day is different. My main job is a Legal Secretary, however, I’m also an ‘IT Superuser’ where I can provide support to colleagues without them needing to contact our main IT department.

I am also a Green Champion where I work with others interested in environmental issues to look at how the firm and its people can improve sustainability, and in late 2017, I became one of Horwich Farrelly’s first cohort of Mental Health First Aiders. To become accredited I had to complete an intensive two-day course covering issues like recognising the early signs of mental ill health, how to offer initial support for people experiencing a mental health problem, and when to guide someone towards seeking professional support.

I am also a trained First Aider and sit on our charity committee so as you can imagine, with so many roles, my day flies by!

How has your career progressed since joining the firm?
When I first joined Horwich Farrelly’s Liverpool office, there was maybe 13 or 14 people. I started off doing the post, opening files and typing. After a couple of years I decided I wanted to be a full time Legal Secretary which I was encouraged to do but again my role was split for a period of time making sure the new file openers and post room colleagues were trained and supported.

Now I am a Legal Secretary and I am always looking for an opportunity to climb the ladder and add other abilities to my repertoire.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and outside interests?
When I am not in work, I spend time with my fiancé. I love watching movies, playing video games and travel. My favourite place is Florida. I go every couple of years, and hope to getting married there in 2021.

What makes working at Horwich Farrelly different from other firms?
When I joined Horwich Farrelly it really felt like I was joining a great firm. There is a positive atmosphere, everyone is really nice (I do believe Horwich Farrelly have a good radar for hiring really nice genuine hard working people) and the flexibility and transparency is great to have.

What advice would you give to others starting out in their career with the firm?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you make a mistake, be honest and it can be rectified. And last of all, don’t forget to have fun.
