Employees from our Cardiff and Manchester offices have joined forces with Admiral to provide a helping hand for WellChild, the national charity for sick children. Over the course of two days the team of 19 volunteers transformed a once uninviting garden into a safe and relaxing play space for a disabled child in Neath, South Wales.
Work started on 30 September with team morale high thanks to the sunny Welsh weather. After removing debris and rubble the team set to work installing timber decking, painting the garden walls, creating a vegetable patch and installing outdoor play equipment. By the time the team downed their tools on 1 October – some 350 man hours later – the space had been transformed into a welcoming, safe environment.
The project was part of WellChild’s Helping Hands programme which, with the support of volunteers from local businesses, tackles essential home and garden makeover projects for sick children.
“Horwich Farrelly is proud to support WellChild and play an active role in creating a garden that meets the child’s needs and helps improve her quality of life,” explains Nicola Critchley, Partner at Horwich Farrelly. “This was a superb opportunity to give our time and enthusiasm to a great cause, making a real difference and putting our green fingers to the test.”
Paul Longley, Technical Manager at Admiral, said, “We were all really excited to be part of this worthy project within the local community. I’m sure most of us regularly donate to charitable causes, but much less often do we get the chance to roll up our sleeves and make a difference ourselves! We’re grateful to both Admiral and Horwich Farrelly for providing the opportunity and did all we could to make it a special garden for this special family.”
Lee Trunks, Head of Helping Hands, said: “Receiving the support of companies such as Admiral and Horwich Farrelly is essential for WellChild, as it enables us to help families across the UK through our Helping Hands programme. Having volunteers to ‘pitch in’ and ‘graft’ for two full days, regardless of the weather, means we are able to deliver life changing home improvements to children and families that so desperately need our support. All the volunteers should be really proud of the transformation they have made to the garden in such a small space of time, and they should know that’s its impact will be felt for such a long time.”
The event was the fourth such makeover involving volunteers from Horwich Farrelly in the last 18 months. In recognition of our ongoing support we were delighted to be invited to WellChild’s annual awards which were held last night in London.
