Horwich Farrelly launches Easter and Summer Vacation Schemes

January, 17, 2018

Horwich Farrelly has announced the launch of its 2018 Easter and Summer Vacation Schemes, two week paid placements designed to provide law graduates, or those currently completing their Legal Practice Course (LPC), with hands-on work experience.

The firm is hoping to build on the success of last year’s programme – the first time Horwich Farrelly ran a Vacation Scheme – which saw more than a dozen full time roles offered to those taking part, and 86% of participants saying they were likely to recommend the placement to others.

Vacation Scheme

This year the Easter Vacation Scheme takes place between Monday 26 March and Friday 6 April, with the Summer Scheme running from Monday 25 June to Friday 6 July.

Each programme gives students the opportunity to spend time in the firm’s Counter Fraud and Motor & Casualty departments, where they’ll be assigned a training buddy to provide support and guidance throughout.

Those accepted onto the Vacation Scheme will enjoy a blend of work-based activities including a mock trial, attending a court hearing, presentations and workshops from a number of Partners and professional development sessions covering topics like CV building, interview techniques and how to get the most out of LinkedIn.

Building on success

Thomas Reynard, Chief Operating Officer, said “Our Vacation Schemes are twice as long as those offered by most other law firms, and are designed to be extremely challenging, so it’s a big commitment from both those taking part and our colleagues who develop the course content.

“We feel two weeks is needed for students to get a real sense of the work we do, our culture and values and what we can offer them in terms of career development opportunities. It also allows us to assess an individual’s strengths and how they work in a team, and to get a feel for how well they would fit in should they be offered a permanent role at the end of the fortnight.

“Like our legal apprenticeships, our Vacation Scheme is designed to attract a diverse range of talent to the firm. Last year we were thrilled to offer 13 full time roles to those who took part in the programme, and we’re endeavouring to recruit a similarly high proportion from this year’s intake.”

A novel approach to training contracts

As part of Horwich Farrelly’s commitment to growing talent from within training contracts are only offered to existing employees, rather than being advertised to external candidates. One person who is looking to benefit from this policy is Georgina O’Brien who took part in last year’s Easter Vacation Scheme after completing her LPC at the University of Law in Chester.

Georgina said, “Before applying for the Vacation Scheme I’d not heard of Horwich Farrelly, however, the placement surpassed my expectations.

“Throughout the two weeks everyone was incredibly friendly and approachable, and the work was both demanding and challenging. For example, you’d be given appropriate training by a Partner or Associate, and then asked to complete a task involving a current case such as drafting a response to an insurer based on a specific legal precedent.

“There was always someone on hand to answer any queries I had, and once completed my supervisor would review and provide feedback on my work, before anything was sent to the client. “This allows you to apply your academic knowledge to a real world scenario and, as you’re weren’t dealing with ‘dummy’ files, you felt that you were making a real contribution to the firm.

“You learn so much from this approach and, whilst it might sound a bit daunting, having your own buddy throughout meant support was on hand whenever you needed it.”
