Leading specialist insurance industry law firm, Horwich Farrelly, has offered five full time roles at the culmination of its Easter Vacation Scheme.
Continuing its commitment to investment in future legal talent, Horwich Farrelly ran the two-week placement to give law students a more in-depth insight than the traditional five-day schemes offered by most firms. The five new recruits will be joining the firm’s 200-strong Counter Fraud department over the summer.
The 11 students who took part in the Easter Vacation Scheme
First launched last year, Horwich Farrelly’s Vacation Scheme covers a wide range of activities, including shadowing experienced lawyers, taking part in a mock trial and professional development sessions in CV writing, interview tips and how to get the most out of LinkedIn. Each student is assigned a training buddy who supports them throughout their time with the firm.
Competition for the two week legal placement held during the Easter break was tougher than ever this year with more than 100 applications for the 11 spaces on offer. The majority of places on the firm’s summer Vacation Scheme, which runs from 25 June to 6 July, have also already been filled.
One of the students on the Easter placement was Olivia Haddock, currently studying a Legal Practice Course (LPC) in Liverpool. She said of the placement: “The range of activities at Horwich Farrelly was extremely engaging, giving me a genuine hands-on chance to develop and learn a lot; the mock trial was particularly useful as it was a great opportunity to experience how a barrister would defend a case in court, as well as giving me the chance to work on essential skills like public speaking. Legal work experience at another firm sometimes felt as if they were trying to find tasks for me to do, but that certainly wasn’t the case at Horwich Farrelly.”
Another student, Kate Marsh, currently completing her LPC in Manchester, having studied Law in Newcastle, added: “During the two weeks, the scope of people I met – from Partners and Paralegals, to those in support teams like HR and Marketing – gave me a real sense of how everyone works together at the firm.”
Olivia Haddock, Kate Marsh and Louis Gorman have all accepted offers to join the firm full time
Louis Gorman, currently studying for a Graduate Diploma in Law, having originally studied criminal justice and criminology in the United States, also joined the scheme, and commented: “The best thing about the experience for me is how well rounded it is. It is not just focused on Horwich Farrelly but has given us all transferable skills we can take forward in our careers.”
Last year saw 13 full time roles offered to students on completion of the placement, with two individuals already offered a training contract, to commence this month.
Ronan McCann, Partner at Horwich Farrelly, commented: “We have been hugely encouraged by both the interest in this scheme and the high calibre of the applicants. The initiative is still in its relative infancy, but has already gained an excellent reputation for enabling law students to fast-track their legal career with us. We look forward to welcoming our five newest recruits over the summer on what we hope will be the beginning of a long and fruitful career in law with us.”
Law students interested in the remaining spaces on the summer Vacation Scheme should apply here.
