Horwich Farrelly has received a prestigious accolade for its unique approach to employee reward and recognition.
The specialist law firm was announced as the winner in the category of Excellence in Reward & Recognition at the HR in Law Awards, which were held on 3 May in London.

The award was given for the firm’s partnership with ThanksBox, an online platform which has empowered their 750 employees to send messages – or ‘Thanks’ – to colleagues whenever they go the extra mile. Each month the top performers are given a perk in the form of a gift voucher, additional day’s holiday or a team night out, and more than 500 rewards have been handed out to date.
The initiative was launched after just 42% of employees said, in the firm’s 2016 engagement survey, that they felt they regularly received recognition or praise for doing their job well. In response, the firm’s HR team looked at a number of options to address the issue, with the criteria that the chosen solution had to be transparent and user-friendly. After an extensive review the firm selected ThanksBox, a peer-to-peer recognition platform which is used by organisations ranging from the NHS to Intercontinental Hotel Group.
In February 2017, recognising that the introduction of ThanksBox would mark a significant cultural change, an offbeat campaign based on the ThanksBox logo was devised by the firm’s in-house marketing team, encouraging colleagues to think ‘inside the box’.
Less than a year after launch, 92% of employees were regularly using ThanksBox with over 11,000 messages of recognition sent.

In presenting the award the judges said they “were impressed with the focus on recognition, the engaging communication, the impressive take-up from the firm and the positive impact reported by people”.
Liz Partington, Horwich Farrelly’s Director of HR, said “As the firm has grown in size it has presented a real challenge in ensuring those people who go the extra mile are recognised accordingly. Whilst the introduction of ThanksBox has been a major cultural change, by making recognition more visible, more immediate and more consistent across our office network we’ve created a more switched on – and happier – workforce.
“The unconventional launch of ThanksBox showed a great deal of creativity and imagination, and was a superb example of teams from across the firm working together with a single vision. We’re delighted with how well our people have embraced ThanksBox, and to be recognised at the HR in Law Awards really is the icing on the cake for the project.”
Luke Fisher, CEO of ThanksBox added, ““Horwich Farrelly’s commitment to actively maintain and live by their values whilst growing rapidly, should inspire businesses everywhere. They’ve continued building a highly engaged workforce, in an environment that their people genuinely want to be in – It’s exactly what will see them continue to excel and why we’re excited to be a part of the journey, helping them redefine the standard that companies should be aiming to reach when developing their culture.”
